The Beast
Every once in a while
the beast, that resides
within me, awakens;
licks his lips…
bares his snaggle-toothed grin;
preparing to unleash
an unholy torrent
of pain and anguish
on the unsuspecting masses.
And though I try
to keep him chained
and chloroformed,
to spare others of his venom.
I never really know
just what will rouse him
from his dreamless slumber.
I never, ever know what it is,
that will next set him off.
And so—when the unimaginable occurs,
and he rears up, to strike
fear into his victims,
I do my best
to mitigate the damage…
do what I can to soothe him
before he can draw first blood;
before he draws last blood!
For, regardless of what awoke him,
it is I that would be to blame,
were I to do nothing,
letting him run rampant;
were I to let him have free rein.

okay first of all LOL @ chloroform!
Also, we all have these inner beasts/demons that we struggle with. I know I do. I make friends with them, then they agree to protect me when I need strength, and I agree to not let them out otherwise. …:O
They make for good inspiration (as we see here).
I Love You *kisses*

Yeah, they can be quite ornery. So, what do your beasts/demons get out of the deal? It doesn’t sound like a fair exchange. 😀
Yeah, well I liked the image portrayed by chloroformed. 😛

It’s a great image, it just made me smile and slightly giggle. They get to stay, and not fight with me. Tho, sometimes I have to punish them. They’re like children; gotta keep ’em in line, but with reason not overly forceful.

I’ll have to try that out sometime: keep them in line with reason, not force…*pondering*

A stern voice and fairness go a long way. *kisses* 😉

I loved this !!! My beast requires taming also – but you said it so much better than I did:
The mean reds
worse than the blues
from Breakfast at Tiffany’s
yah know – Audrey Hepburn
meaner
uglier
feel keener
than the blues
wanna stomp on someone’s head
kick someone out
without a doubt
yeah I know who
and why
wanna wish them bye-bye
and in all of it I have no control at all
there is not a damn thing I can do
except go
pooh pooh
thank goodness sites like this
exist
to blog the mean reds away
yay yay !!
Please read my posted poem – My Lover – and let me know – I wrote it for Cheryl’s Pals Collab I have written some amazing stuff for that site. Amazing to me as tackling poetry again is still so new
Thank you !!!

Yeah…poetry certainly does provide that outlet to release our anger in a more productive manner.
I’ll check out your page for your poems. I haven’t been to the Cheryl’s Pals Collab in quite a while. I have to give them credit for introducing me to some great friends and for providing me with some inspiration as I was growing as a poet. However, certain things just struck me the wrong way and as a result, my inspiration and enjoyment of the site waned.

Nice! I have been fighting mine lately in regard to an ongoing email thread… so far I am winning, but I can’t guarantee it will stay that way 😉
I really liked the ending lines:
“..For, regardless of what awoke him,
it is I that would be to blame
were I to do nothing,
letting him run rampant;
were I to let him have free rein.”
It just summed it up nicely 🙂

Thanks Jo. It is a constant struggle. I hope you come out of your battle victorious. 😀
I liked those lines too, though I wasn’t sure if it should be rein or reign…I always mix those two words up. 😀

Thanks Cheryl. Sometimes it is just so difficult to hold that beast in.
