Nine Years Later

Nine Years Later

Under crystalline skies, memories rise
up, harkening back to nightmare attacks.
And the pain lingers on, faded but never gone.
For on that dark day, when evil held sway,
my naiveté died. Shocked numb, I cried.
I watched—death unfold, shivering from the cold
heartless actions of man.  Yet, unity began,
only to disappear. Division reared
its ugly head. Upon its virulence, evil fed.
And we lost sight of ourselves, even knowing the cost
we would pay…in blood—a torrential flood.
We’d rather turn a blind eye, to the sky;
bury our heads in the sand, than demand
that justice be done. The war lost, before it begun.
And so, as we walk towards fate…upon this date
the Doomsday Clock ticks. It makes me sick
knowing that nine years later, we’re still no safer.
